FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the Malibu Middle School Athletics Program? Established in Spring 2024 by the Malibu Education Foundation, with seed funding from the City of Malibu General Grant Program, Malibu Middle School Athletics is a no-cut interscholastic athletics program. We believe that encouraging ALL students to play sports in middle school with their peer group, competing together and building their athletic, teamwork and communications skills is important for the physical and mental health of our students.
Who can participate? All Malibu Middle School students are encouraged to participate. This is an opportunity to try different sports and compete against other schools with your classmates.
Who do we compete against? We work with the FIYA league (onfiya.org) to organize the schedule and schools. In Spring, we competed against Santa Monica, Beverly Hills and Culver City.
When are practices? Practices will take place after school, 2 days a week (schedule to be determined once registration is complete, number of teams and coaches confirmed). While we were flexible in the Spring, it will be expected that students will attend all practices and assigned games in the Fall.
Will there ever be 'tryouts'? We will test a tryout team this Fall with Futsal, indoor soccer, as a complement to the Spring Soccer teams for more advanced players. While the program will provide access to athletics to all students regardless of skill level and experience, there will be instances where we may introduce a single tryout sport.
When are the games? The games are determined once FIYA organizes the leagues and schedules, so we will not have the dates until September. All games do take place during the week (with the exception of Cross Country Meets, which may happen on the weekend).
Is transportation to games provided? We are working on a permanent and affordable solution for Fall, so for now the answer is "sometimes." Transportation must be booked through the district, and availability and expense become a challenge - especially with the great participation! We will communicate the schedule and plan as soon as its available in September, and ask the parents to work with us as we solve the transportation question!
When do practices begin for Fall Sports? Practices are after school and will begin the week of 8/26. Days of week TBD.
Are there uniforms? Yes, we order the same quality uniforms as Malibu High School. They are distributed at the start of the season and collected at the end of the season for re-use. Students/parents are responsible for caring for their uniforms throughout the season.
Is there a parent booster club or committee for Middle School Athletics? Yes, the PTSA leads the athletics committee - a group of parents who work with Daryl and Greg to plan and organize the season. It's a great way to meet other parents and get involved. Email PTSAmalibu@gmail.com if you'd like to learn more.
Is there a cost to participate? No. This program will continue to be fully funded by Malibu Education Foundation, officially launching in Summer 2024. The Foundation funds the athletic coordinator, coaches, uniforms, league fees, equipment and transportation. Parents are responsible for any special shoes required, however, if assistance is needed - please reach out to Principal Greg Schellenberg or Lorene Whitehouse. This was all made possible by a grant from Malibu City and the work of Malibu Education Foundation. Email info@
